Big Change Coming in AAEES Elections

Online Voting

The May to June timeframe is when we hold elections for the Academy's officers and trustees. Until now, that meant a massive mailing on the part of the Academy to put the paper ballot into the members' hands, along with some supporting materials and a non-postage-paid return envelope.

You'll notice the key phrase, until now. That's right! We are changing over to running our elections electronically. Working with an experienced and highly-regarded firm whose business is doing elections for not-for-profit organizations, we will be implementing this year's election totally electronically. Rather than handling paper and doing manual ballot counts, each eligible member will be sent an electronic ballot that looks a lot like what we've been doing in previous years. The difference will be that it takes one click to open the ballot, a few more clicks to vote for your candidates, and one more to submit your vote.

With this system there will be every incentive to vote immediately rather than put it off, and running the risk of never actually voting. So when you see an item in your inbox that says AAEES Election of Officers 2020 please do us a favor and set aside a few minutes to take care of that ballot right away. The system we are using for the online election is myDirectVote so the email will be coming from directvote.net.

Taking care of this right away will guarantee that you get no more reminders. Or conversely, not responding will guarantee that you do get a reminder if you are too busy with other things to fill out the ballot right then.

The bottom line is that we expect to see participation rates improve by at least 30% and possibly more. We see this change as being good for our members and good for the Academy. Please feel free to contact us with any comments you might have on how the new process worked for you and what changes or improvements you might recommend for the next cycle in 2020.

TLDR: How do I cast my ballot for the AAEES Election of Officers 2020?

On Tuesday, May 21, all eligible BCEEs, BCEEMs, BCESs, and AAEES Members will receive an email from AAEES Election Coordinator at noreply@directvote.net. This email will include your unique log in credentials and url to access the online ballot.

Log in, read the biographical profiles of the candidates, click on your choice of candidates, and click submit.

That's it! You can vote in less time than it took to read this.

Who is eligible to vote?

All Board Certified Environmental Engineers, Board Certified Environmental Scientists, Board Certified Environmental Engineering Members, and AAEES Members current with their dues (have an expiration date of 12/31/2019) as of May 17 were emailed a notice on May 21 their log in credentials to vote. For those individuals who had emails that bounced back or for which we did not have an email address on file, hard copies of the ballots have been mailed.

If you have misplaced your email containing your log in credentials, please contact Yolanda at YMoulden@aaees.org and we will re-issue your email.

The polls are open until June 15, 2019.

Thanks for taking the time to cast your ballot.
